Introduction

The Ngati Paoa Trust Board (“Trust Board”) was established in 2004.

The Trust Board received recognition by the Maori Land Court as the principal representative entity for the Iwi of Ngati Paoa in 2009.

In 2011 the Trust Board received and secured mandate for the iwi of Ngati Paoa and the Crown to be the representative entity for Ngati Paoa to enter into and complete negotiations with the Crown regarding comprehensive settlement of Ngati Paoa historic treaty claims.

The last three decades has seen concerted efforts to unify the iwi and advance them into a world of promise, held in perpetuity, when chiefs of Ngati Paoa signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 on the Waitemata Harbour, Karaka Bay in Glendowie and at Coromandel.

With the establishment of the Ngāti Paoa Trust Board in November 2004.....

Mandate

The Trust Board is the principal mandated representative for the iwi of Ngati Paoa and all whanau who whakapapa to Paoa.

The Mandated Negotiators have been appointed pursuant to the Deed of Mandate

Treaty Settlement

The Trust Board is the mandated authority of Ngati Paoa for negotiations with the Crown regarding the comprehensive settlement of Ngati Paoa Treaty Claims.

As a result the Trust Board is responsible for overseeing. undertaking and finalising all settlement negotiations with the Crown for Ngati Paoa; and the individual Mandated Negotiators for Ngati Paoa are ultimately answerable to the Trust Board as the mandated representative for the iwi of Ngati Paoa.

The Trust Board was mandated through a fair, open and robust process. The Trust Board’s mandate in relation to Treaty Settlement negotiations and settlement is governed by the Ngati Paoa Deed of Mandate

The Trust Board is also responsible for ensuring that the cultural, historical, heritage, values, and other interests of Ngati Paoa are strongly represented.

Local Government Act and Resource Management Act

The Trust Board is the mandated authority of Ngati Paoa in respect of all Local Government Act and Resource Management Act matters that may effect and/or may be relevant to Ngati Paoa.

The Trust Board was mandated through a fair, open and robust process. The Trust Board’s mandate in relation to Local Government Act and Resource Management Act matters is confirmed by, among other things, a 2009 Order of the Maori Land Court

Iwi Mandate

The Trust Board is also responsible for ensuring that the cultural, historical, heritage, values, and other interests of Ngati Paoa are strongly represented.
